India’s Unified Payments Interface, or UPI, now handles more than 85% of the country’s digital payments, according to recent data. Monthly UPI transactions have crossed 30 lakh crore rupees, while debit card usage has fallen sharply since 2021. The system processes over 18 billion transactions every month across cities, towns, and local markets. UPI-linked credit card spending is also rising as digital payments expand. India has introduced UPI services in countries including Singapore, France, the UAE, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius. The IMF says India now accounts for nearly half of the world’s real-time digital payment transactions.
